The Outdoor Naturalist

In a letter dated 1768 Gilbert White, then an unknown amateur, descriped himself rather coyly as an 'outdoor naturalist'.  Little did he know in that letter he would be detailing exactly why he is still remembered today.  In this talk Kimberley James, collections manager at Gilbert White's House & Garden's, will take you through Gilbert White's life illustrating how he became that father of ecology and one of the most beloved nature writers of all time.

With its striking views, motor cars turned Newlands Corner on the North Downs near Guildford into a notable beauty spot: Fairyland, a hospital, soil buildings, army, airshows, Stracheys, Agatha Christie, Clough Williams-Ellis, evacuees, kindertransport and two petrol stations.
